MAY '26 UPDATE! - The pub is saved
What happens now?.
Action Stations
An action group has been formed whose aim is to purchase the Harewood Arms and use it as the heart of a new Community Hub. The group is known as the Broadbottom Community Pub Group and is managed by a committee of 5 volunteers with the support and backing of the local community.
To get involved, email to info@savetheharewood.org.uk. Please let us know your name, address, email & phone, and if you have any relevant skills or experience or time to help.
Save the Pub – Create a Hub
The Harewood Arms is a long-established and well-supported public house, and the last remaining pub in the village. We aim to build on its strengths as a social meeting point to bring the community together, young and old, provide employment and support the local economy.
Our vision is a community hub, offering daytime community activities and services, more evening events, and channelling the profits generated by the business back into community for the benefit of Broadbottom village and our surrounding community.
We aim to work with, and support, other community groups and organisations, including the Community Association, the Cricket Club, Tigellae Pizzas, Friends of Broadbottom Station, the Etherow Centre, Broadbottom Primary School – we’re a Community Benefit Society!
Where are we?
The village of Broadbottom is in the borough of Tameside on the eastern side of Greater Manchester and at the edge of the Peak District National Park.
Community and Funding Support
So far, we have raised over £150,000 in share pledges, donations and grants. This is a measure of the fantastic support and backing of the local community, funding bodies, and our MP Jonathan Reynolds, who has made a share pledge. We really appreciate the level of support, but in reality, if we’re going to get the deal done, we need those that are wavering to get on board, before it’s too late! Let’s save the pub and create a hub. To pledge, donate or buy a t-shirt, visit the Support Us page.
To get involved in other ways, email to info@savetheharewood.org.uk. Please let us know your name, address, email & phone, and if you have any relevant skills or experience or time to help.
What is a Community Hub?
Our goal is a social enterprise with four integrated aims and objectives:
1. A Community Hub: Create a community hub by utilising the trading area and out-buildings for daytime events, expanding the evening/weekend events offered by the pub, running larger community events at the nearby Magdalene Centre, running joint events with other community groups and businesses.
2. Community investment and business development: The pub and brewery are currently generating an operating profit of around £40-50k. Once the business is stabilised under community ownership, our aim is to generate comparable or improved returns, to be invested back into the Community, and the business. The direction of investment will be decided in consultation with the community and local stakeholders like Broadbottom Community Association.
3. A Community Pub: Maintain and develop the Harewood as a viable and successful Community Pub generating profits for investment back into the community and business. We aim to supplement the Friday to Sunday evening food offering delivered by our village’s pizza specialists, Tigellae, with varying food pop-ups on Thursday evenings and potentially at weekend lunchtimes too.
4. Green Mill Brewery: Develop a brewing and marketing team to bring the Brewery up to its full capacity and generating sales to local pubs and beyond. Again, with the aim of investing profits back into the community and business.
We believe this structure best reflects our goal:
To develop a successful Community Hub, run by the community for the benefit of the community
